The Importance of Sleep Cycles: How We Sleep Determines How We Live

Do you ever feel like no matter how much you sleep, you always feel tired? Or perhaps you struggle to fall asleep at night, resulting in a never-ending cycle of exhaustion. Our sleep cycles are incredibly important and play a crucial role in our overall well-being. Proper sleep not only affects our physical health but also our mental health and daily functioning. In this blog post, we will explore the importance of sleep cycles and how they ultimately determine how we live.

Sleep is vital to our body’s ability to function properly. It has been said that in the matter of keeping up the body, sleep is as productive as taking in food. Without proper sleep, our bodies cannot properly rejuvenate and heal themselves. A lack of sleep can lead to increased irritability, cognitive impairment, and weakened immunity. On the other hand, indulging in sleep judiciously can bring happiness and longevity.

Our internal clock, also known as our circadian rhythm, is an amazing thing. It is responsible for carefully orchestrating our daily biological rhythms. Our sleep pattern sets the tone for these rhythms and is responsible for maintaining our body’s equilibrium. Research has revealed that when we wake up in the morning right before the sunrise, it helps us align our internal clocks with nature’s daily rhythms.

To tap into this physiological transformation each morning, Ayurveda recommends beginning your day with dinacharya to optimize your health and wellness. It is during the time of dawn that mammals are biologically attuned to wake up when day breaks, even before possessing color vision. By witnessing the sunrise each morning, we can reset our biological clocks and tune into nature’s natural rhythms.

Getting proper sleep is crucial to our daily functioning. Experts recommend being in bed by ten or eleven at night and getting 7 to 8 hours of sleep to optimize our overall health. A good night’s sleep helps improve cognitive function, memory, productivity, and physical performance. In contrast, inadequate sleep can lead to a range of health problems, including obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.

In conclusion, our sleep cycles are incredibly important and play a significant role in our overall well-being. It is crucial that we prioritize our sleep habits to ensure that we are giving our body the rest it needs to function properly. By getting proper sleep and aligning our internal clocks with nature’s daily rhythms, we can optimize our health and get the most out of our daily lives. So the next time you stay up late or sacrifice sleep, remember that how we sleep ultimately determines how we live.

Sleep Well,

Michelle

  1. Thank you for this article, Michelle! As I go deeper into this life changing transition I’m in, I feel as tho I’m “gulping” sleep…. I also know I’m dealing with depression and that “makes me” choose sleep over wakeful activities. I’m trusting that, in time, sleep will be a blissful state and wakefulness will hold bliss for me as well. Cheryl
