Jyotish Om Jyothi

I am in light. The light is in me.

This is the mantra at the heart of my practice, and the truth at the heart of Jyotish. Every chart I read begins and ends here.

Your first step into the stars

What is Jyotish?

The word Jyotish comes from jyoti, light. It is the ancient astrology of India, practiced for thousands of years alongside Ayurveda, yoga, and meditation as part of one great science of life.

Think of your chart like a sacred GPS for your soul’s journey. It doesn’t tell you where you must go. It shows you the terrain, the seasons ahead, and the roads where your light flows most freely, so you can travel with awareness instead of fear.

Rather than asking Who am I?, Jyotish asks a deeper question: What has come to be lived through me in this lifetime?

Bridge Box

If you’re coming from Western astrology

  • The sidereal zodiac. Jyotish aligns the signs with the actual stars, while Western astrology follows the seasons. Today they differ by about 24°, so your Vedic Sun and Moon are often one sign earlier.
  • Whole sign houses. Each sign is one complete house, which keeps the chart clear and grounded.
  • The 27 nakshatras. The lunar mansions add a soulful layer within each sign, with no real Western equivalent.
  • Dashas. Planetary periods unfold across your whole life, showing the seasons you’re living through and when they change.
  • Karma and dharma. Where Western astrology often looks at personality, Jyotish looks at the soul’s purpose and timing.

The sacred view

A map of soul, karma, and awakening

In Jyotish, the houses are the spaces of your life, and the planets are the karmic intelligences that have come to work through you. They aren’t punishments or rewards. They are teachers, each one asking to be understood and lived more fully.

The ancient yogis spoke of Kundalini Shakti, the sacred energy that rests within each of us, waiting to rise. Your chart can show where that light is already moving, and where it wants to flow next.

Your chart is not your fate. It is an invitation to cooperate with your life rather than fight it.

Try this

A gentle practice with the mantra

  1. Sit comfortably and let your breath slow.
  2. Bring your attention to the center of your chest, the space of the heart.
  3. Silently repeat Jyotish Om Jyothi, and feel its meaning: I am in light, the light is in me.
  4. Continue for three to five minutes, then rest in the stillness that follows.
