What is Ayurveda?
Most simply, Ayurveda is the Art and Science of Self- Knowledge through a deepened connection with the natural world. In Sanskrit, “Ayur” means life and “Veda” means science or knowledge and is commonly translated as “science of life.” A more subtle and beautiful definition is “knowledge of longevity.” Ayurveda is Indian classical medicine.
Why Ayurveda?
Discover the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda and Yoga, rooted in the philosophy of Samkhya. Uncover the secrets of evolution through the development of our senses and the corresponding elements. As humans, we are intricately connected to the world around us – our bodies are influenced by the elements, senses, weather, and seasons.
Discover the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda and Yoga, derived from the profound philosophy of Samkhya. Samkhya unravels the secrets of evolution, tracing the path of the five senses and their corresponding elements. As human beings, our bodies intimately interact with these elements, as well as our senses, weather, and seasons, shaping our experience of the world.
While often referred to as “sister sciences,” Yoga and Ayurveda encompass distinct realms. Yoga encompasses practices of the mind, breath, and body, promoting balanced living and spiritual growth. Ayurveda, on the other hand, offers a practical lifestyle approach that supports and sustains this equilibrium and evolution. It encompasses nutrition, self-care, herbal remedies, and sustaining practices. Ayurveda is not merely something we practice but a way of life we embody. Traditional yogis and yoginis lived an Ayurvedic lifestyle, and my aim is to empower modern practitioners with this ancient heritage, infused with contemporary innovation and individual support.
Inspired by the natural world, Ayurveda encourages us to observe the cycles of seasons, the phases of the day, and the qualities that permeate existence. By understanding and aligning with these rhythms, we gain insight into our own internal patterns and learn to adapt accordingly. Ayurveda focuses on restoring harmony by balancing the five elements – ether, air, fire, water, and earth – both within ourselves and in our external environment. This balance is achieved through the use of opposites. For instance, if your constitution tends to run hot, cooling foods become essential. If you experience dryness, incorporating moist foods is crucial. Just like we change our wardrobes with the seasons, we must adapt our diets, treatments, and practices to suit the fluctuations of nature and our bodies.
According to Ayurvedic principles, disease originates from emotional responses, which manifest as physical symptoms. Therefore, we prioritize addressing the underlying causes rather than solely treating the symptoms. Ayurveda equips us with a range of tools, including bodywork treatments, specific foods, herbs, yogic and breath practices, and exercises, to restore balance and harmony to our inner and outer ecologies.
