In Ayurveda, immunity is known as Vyadhiksamatwa, which is of two types – one that attenuates the manifested disease and the other that prevents the manifestation of diseases. In this blog post, we will dive deep into the concept of Vyadhiksamatwa, its relation to immunity, and how Ayurveda principles can help enhance it.
The first step towards enhancing Vyadhiksamatwa is to understand its components. It is said that Sahaja bala, which is innate immunity, and Kalaja and yuktikurta bala, which is acquired immunity, contribute to Vyadhiksamatwa. Sahaja bala is the immunity that we are born with and it plays a crucial role in protecting us from diseases. On the other hand, Kalaja anad yuktikrita bala is the immunity that we acquire through exposure to various factors.
One of the key factors that Ayurveda highlights for enhancing Vyadhiksamatwa is a balanced diet. Interestingly, Ayurveda states that all unwholesome food articles are not equally harmful, and all dosas are not equally powerful. For example, an over obese or emaciated individual, or those who consume unwholesome food or lesser amounts of food, may have a weakened Vyadhiksamatwa. On the other hand, individuals who have an opposite physical constitution, consume a balanced diet, and have normal Agni, Srotas, and Dhatu, are capable of resisting diseases.
Ayurveda also emphasizes the importance of mental and emotional factors in enhancing Vyadhiksamatwa. For example, excessive stress, anxiety, or depression may weaken our immune system. On the other hand, positive emotions, such as love, compassion, and happiness, can strengthen it. Ayurveda suggests various practices, such as meditation, yoga, and pranayama, to promote emotional balance and enhance Vyadhiksamatwa.
Ayurveda also highlights the importance of detoxification in enhancing Vyadhiksamatwa. Our body accumulates toxins due to various factors, such as a poor diet, pollution, stress, and lack of exercise. These toxins can weaken our immune system and make us susceptible to diseases. Ayurveda recommends various detoxification treatments, such as Panchakarma, to eliminate these toxins and enhance Vyadhiksamatwa.
Finally, Ayurveda suggests that our lifestyle choices play a crucial role in enhancing Vyadhiksamatwa. For example, our sleep patterns, exercise routines, and exposure to nature can impact our immune system. Ayurveda recommends that we follow a daily routine, called Dinacharya, that aligns our lifestyle with natural rhythms and enhances our Vyadhiksamatwa.
The concept of Vyadhiksamatwa is critical to our understanding of immunity, as outlined in Ayurveda. Enhancing Vyadhiksamatwa involves a holistic approach that takes into account our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. By adopting Ayurveda principles in our day-to-day life, we can enhance our innate and acquired immunity, prevent diseases, and lead healthy and prosperous lives.
