The second goal is Artha, which means wealth or resources for self-support. Artha encourages individuals to work hard and create a stable foundation to support their life goals. The pursuit of Artha is not considered selfish in Vedic teachings because it is believed that individuals who have their basic needs met are better equipped to serve their community.
The third goal of life is Dharma, which means to embellish or uphold. Dharma refers to doing what you are born to do or fulfilling your life purpose. Just like how the sun shines, the river flows, and the cow yields milk, each individual has a unique role to play in the larger scheme of things. Dharma encourages individuals to recognize their unique strengths and use them to serve others and create a more harmonious world. In yoga philosophy, living a life in accordance with Dharma is considered the highest form of living.
The fourth and final goal of life is Moksha, which means liberation or freedom from bondage. Moksha refers to the ultimate goal of spiritual growth and enlightenment. In Vedic philosophy, it is believed that every individual has the potential to realize their true nature and experience permanent happiness. The pursuit of Moksha involves practices like meditation, self-inquiry, and surrendering the ego. While Moksha may seem like a lofty goal, Vedic philosophy teaches that even small steps towards spiritual growth can lead one closer to liberation.
The four Purusharthas provide a roadmap for individuals seeking a well-rounded and fulfilling life. While each goal is distinct, they are interconnected, and balancing each of them is essential for overall growth and contentment.
