Low Iron

Iron is found in every cell of the body. I have struggled my whole life with having low iron levels, so naturally when I became pregnant and the volume of my blood increased my hemoglobin levels have been low. Hemoglobin is the substance in red blood cells that transports oxygen all over the body. If you don¹t have enough iron, your body has to work a whole lot harder to get the energy it needs, which has left me feeling tired, weak, irritable and unable to focus. The nurse practitioner suggested I take Ferrous sulphate, which is commonly prescribed to prevent and correct iron deficiency anemia during pregnancy, I chose to avoid it because ferrous sulphate is often times poorly absorbed by the body and taxes the organs of elimination – liver, kidneys, intestines – and can be very constipating. I chose to fight my extreme fatigue I have been experiencing caused by this iron deficiency, I first turn to iron-rich foods. By changing my diet, and adding iron rich foods I could see significant changes in your energy level within a couple of days.

Yellow Dock Root tincture that I made, its an herb widely used by herbalists as a general health tonic. It grows throughout North America and is used in Native American herbal formulas. You can purchase some at my online shop! Yellow Dock Root has historically been used as an iron-builder for pregnant women because it replenishes the bloods hemoglobin. It’s also a great digestive aid that alleviates heartburn by increasing the digestive enzymes in the stomach. Who doesn’t need that when they are pregnant?? No more heartburn! Always listen to your intuition before adding an herbal supplement to your diet.

Below is a list of iron rich foods that I have been trying to include in my diet along with nettle tea, dandelion root coffee and a kelp supplement called ErythroPro by Premier Research labs, it contains organic kelp, organic Irish moss, organic oat grass, organic beet root, as well as organic chlorella, Organic tomato, Organic bilberry and reishi mushroom extract. Great supplements combines with great greens and beets I make sure to add plenty of vitamin C to help with absorption and assimilation of the iron has made a huge difference in my energy levels!! My favorite vitamin C sources are grapefruit and strawberries!!!

There are some foods to avoid and that would be coffee, excess bran, alkalinizes and phosphates as they inhibit the absorption of iron.

Energy Building Juice:

4 beets

2 carrots

2 grapefruits

Juice and enjoy!!

Anemia Prevention Brew:

1/2 ounce dried Nettle leaves

1/2 ounce dried Parsley leaves

1/2 ounce dried Comfrey leaves

1/2 ounce dried Yellow Dock root

1/4 ounce dried Peppermint leaves

Measure herbs and put in half gallon mason jar …….. Pour boiling water in jar until it is totally full. Steep herbs for 8 hours.

This brew contains 3 excellent sources of iron: nettle, parsley and yellow dock root. It provides folic acid from the parsley and vitamin B12 from the Comfrey. The green eras all contain vitamin C which aids iron absorption and the Mint makes it taste good!

Drink freely up to four cups a day for up to 1 week. You can use this medicine every month as a blood builder and purifier!

Enjoy these blood builders and many blessings on your journey!

Many Blessings!

7 Day Juice Cleanse

This is an extension of the 3-Day Juice Cleanse and the 5-Day Juice Cleanse that was posted earlier this month. Cleansing is a great way to kickstart your way to better health! Give your body a break from caffeine, sugar, wheat, dairy, and alcohol so that you may establish new, healthier habits, renew your energy and detox your body with this invigorating week long cleanse!

Make sure to use fresh organic ingredients for your juice, to ensure that your juices contain no synthetic ingredients. This supplies the body with a concentrated batch of natural vitamins and minerals in their natural form. With the extra nutrition, your body’s performance will improve and more energy will be available. With all of this extra energy many people report wanting to exercise, which leads to clearer thinking, healthier emotional states & weight control (you may even sleep better too). As dis-ease thrives in bodies which are filled with toxins, bacteria and carcinogens, most of which are found in un-healthy food. To prevent dis-ease and effectively defend itself, the body requires a wide assortment of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. When you feel healthy, its natural to get more out of life. That is why I created this simple 5 Day Cleanse to liven up your life!!!

Click here for symptoms of detoxification and what you can do about it.

Juices

To prepare your body for juice cleansing please check out my 3 Day Cleanse, its easy and it will really help prepare the body for a 7 day juice fast.

7 Day Juice Cleanse to Boost Your Metabolism!

Day 1

  • Drink 48 ounces of fresh juice throughout the day.
  • Drink water. Drink half your body weight in ounces of water. (150 pound person would drink 75 ounces of water).
  • Fiber. Drink apple juice and 1 teaspoon fiber cleansing formula mixed with either 8 ounce of water and/or apple juice. Drink this twice a day.

Juice Fasting

During your cleansing process:

  • Take time to go for a 20 minute walk everyday.
  • Stretch and practice yoga.
  • Meditate
  • Dry Skin Brush
  • Infrared Sauna
  • Enemas!!! 1 or 2 a day depending on your detox symptoms!
  • Take Detox Baths (I love bathing in Sole Water)
  • Get your Beauty Sleep
  • LOVE YOURSELF!!

Please note: During a juice cleanse I generally don’t use tomatoes. Tomatoes are a great detoxifier but  they also upset calcium metabolism and should be avoided in cases of arthritis. Large amounts of tomatoes are weakening for everyone. So I like to enjoy them after a fast as they are easy to digest.

Another side note. I do not juice cucumbers in the winter. Remember that phrase, “As cool as a cucumber”? Well, a cucumber at any given time can be literally 20 degrees cooler than the temperature of the surrounding area. Since it is already cold here in Montana, we don’t need to tax our bodies with extra cold, so I leave cucumber juicing to the heat of the summer!

On this seven day journey, try to free yourself of the past hurts and worries that continue to live with you. Let them float away. Journal or write letters (you don’t have to send them) to give yourself a regular outlet for your emotions, regrets, and worries. Don’t push them aside, harness them and move on as a smarter and lighter person.

Cherry Orange Soup

Flathead Cherries are sweet and heavenly!
Every year we pick and pit cherries when they are in season. I freeze them, I dry them, we eat them! We are so lucky to live in an area that supplies us with fresh sweet cherries every year!
This is a great soup to make just before a doing a juice cleanse, it is also a good soup to make during a whole food or a raw food cleanse.
Since, Saturday is the start of our 7-day juice fast, I decided to make Cherry Orange Soup!

Cherry Picking

This soup is like having dessert, its so delicious and the kids love it too!
  • Cherry Orange Soup
  • 1 pound sweet cherries, pitted (Flathead cherry’s are the best!)
  • ½ cup black cherry juice
  • ½ cup almond mylk
  • ½ cup coconut milk
  • 1 teaspoon grated orange peel, top with orange slice
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • pinch cinnamon
  • Directions: Blend and Chill. Top with orange slice. It doesn’t get more simple than that!
Cherries are relatives of the plum, and sweet cherries are much more difficult to produce than sour cherries because, not uncommonly, a late spring frost can devastate a crop. Most cherries are produced in Washington, Colorado, Oregon, Idaho, and Utah. But here in the Northwest Montana we are blessed with the Flathead Cherry!
Woo Woo!
cherry picking
Sweet cherries are a warming food that increases vital energy and tone the spleen-pancreas, liver, and kidneys. Also astringent, they remove excess body acids and blood stagnation when eaten regularly, and are therefor therapeutic for gout, paralysis, numbness in the extremities, and rheumatic pain in the lower half of the body.
Sweet cherries reduce vata and kapha and can be used in moderation by pitta.
Cherries are an excellent source of iron and contain some phosphorus, potassium and calcium, as well as vitamin A.
Nutrition info was obtained from The New Whole Foods Encyclopedia, by Rebecca Wood.

To be healthy: eat right, walk right and talk to yourself right!
Cheers to a beautiful day!
Blissfully,
Michelle

Walking Lightly Soup

It’s that time of year, when I love to eat tons of soup! There is absolutely nothing like soup! By nature its eccentric, in the fact that no two are ever alike!
Make this soup as part of your 3-Day Cleanse!

This is the soup I used to make most often out at the ranch I occasionally cater retreats at. It is derived from the basic soup recipe (see below). Create something new every time!
Walking Lightly Soup:

  • 1 whole apple
  • 1 whole avocado
  • 1 bunch greens (mustard, arugula, collards, broccoli, spinach, baby lettuces, or other favorite greens)
  • 1 bunch herbs, (basil, parsley, cilantro, or other favorite herb)
  • 1 whole zucchini
  • 3 tablespoons miso
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 inch ginger
  • dash cayenne pepper
  • 2 to 3 cups blessed water or more if needed
Place all ingredients in a blender, blend and serve!

Basic Soup Recipe:
  • 2 cups non-sweet fruit
Choose between cucumber, tomato, zucchini, pepper, or tomatillo. You may choose to use one or more of these.
  • 1 to 2 cups liquid
Use one cup first. Then if needed, add more liquid at the end. Choose between blessed water, coconut water, or vegetable juice.
  • 1 to 2 cups greens
Vegetables or herbs. Choose between kale, parsley, spinach, arugula (also a spice), celery, and your favorite herbs and veggies!
  • 1/2 to 1 whole avocado, meat of one young coconut, or 2-4 Tablespoons of tahini.
  • 4 Tablespoons olive oil, or other cold pressed oil like flax or hemp.
  • 2 Tablespoons Miso
  • 1/2 to 1 whole apple
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt, or 2 tablespoons nama shoyu (or Bragg’s for gluten sensitive)
  • 1 inch ginger (optional)
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • 1 pinch cayenne pepper
Blend all ingredients. You may choose to create a chunky soup by dicing some of the vegetables, or adding some. Warm it up till it feels warm to the touch! But not over 120 degrees so that you may preserve the enzymes and keep the soup ALIVE!
Some other great additions are kelp noodles or zucchini noodles, marinated or grated vegetables, chopped avocado, chopped onions, chopped tomatoes, olives, or sprouts.

Be creative, have fun and enjoy!
Good Soup is one of the prime ingredients of good living. For soup can do more to lift the spirits and stimulate the appetite then any other one dish.”
~Louis P. De Gouy, The Soup Book (1949)

Many Blessings!

3 Day Cleanse

We are already into the second week of the New Year and I have some clients that are going to start a juice fast with me starting January 12th. Before a juice fast or if you wanted to to a whole body cleanse, it is important to start letting go of foods and simplify your diet. It is extremely important to prepare for your cleanse in order to have a safe and pleasant experience.

A 3 day cleanse will help you re-boot and give you more energy or prepare you for deeper cleansing like a juice fast. During your three day cleanse abstain from coffee, alcohol, meat, fried foods and white refined sugar and flour (sweets, breads, bagels, pasta, ect.)

During your 3-day cleanse

  • Drink plenty of water! Water is the principal chemical component of the body, comprising of about 70% of our body’s weight. It is important that we are all individually unique and require different amounts. A good rule of thumb is to drink half of your body’s weight in ounces of water everyday. For example, if you weigh 150 pounds, you would drink 75 ounces of water a day. NOTE: tea, juice, and other drinks are NOT substitutes for water! For more information on the healing benefits of water, click here.
  • Eat as much live (raw) food as possible … lots of delicious fresh fruits and vegetables!
  • Try to avoid beans, cabbage, nuts, broccoli and cauliflower as they may cause gas.

Daily Schedule

Breakfast Time:

Lunch Time:

Snacks: Only eat snacks when you are truly hungry.

Evening Meal:

The main thing is to keep it simple. Don’t over think it. Eat until you are full and then be done. Make sure to drink plenty of water.

In addition to a cleansing diet it is important to incorporate lifestyle practices that will help enhance the cleansing process both physically, mentally and spiritually.

  • Meditation/Prayer (this is my favorite)
  • Conscious Breathing
  • Journaling
  • Body Movement like walking, yoga, rebounding
  • Skin Care is also important, dry skin brushing, sunlight, infrared sauna
  • Sleep

You can do it! Grab a friend and do a 3-day cleanse! It will boost your energy, leaving you feeling great!

Kiwi Apple Spinach Smoothie

My daughter and I were in the grocery store the other day and she found some organic kiwi. Its so funny that we can get organic kiwi in Montana in the winter but she really wanted some. So we bought some.

Kiwi’s are a fun little green fruit with dramatic black seeds in the center. You can eat the skin but I find its fuzzy texture to be not so appealing. Its like trying to kiss you husband who has stubbles on his face and then really all you get is whisker burn, only with a kiwi you are eating it. So needless to say I like to peel my kiwi.

kiwi

Kiwi actually has amazing health benefits:

  • Kiwi’s Phytonutrients Protect DNA – Fascinating. Anti-oxidant properties of the kiwi fruit have the ability to protect DNA from oxygen-related damage.
  • Premier Anti-Oxidant Protection – An excellent source of vitamin C that helps neutralize the body of free radicals. Free radicals might sound cool, but they actually cause damage to our cells and lead to problems with inflammation and cancer (which is not so radical if you know what I mean). And since vitamin C is so good for the immune system, kiwi may be helpful in preventing recurrent ear infections.
  • Fiber for Blood Sugar Control Plus Cardiovascular and Colon Health – Pretty loaded but the fiber in kiwi has been shown to reduce high cholesterol levels, which in turn may reduce the risk of heart disease and heart attack. Kiwi is helpful in keeping blood sugar levels of diabetic patients under control. As an added bonus, fiber is good for binding and removing toxins from the colon, which is helpful for preventing colon cancer.
  • Protection Against Asthma – Eating vitamin C may be effective in protecting against respiratory symptoms associated with asthma like wheezing.
  • Protection Against Macular Degeneration – I remember my Great Grandmother telling me I need to eat my carrots to keep my eyes in tip top shape, but it looks as though eating kiwi might be even more important than carrots because they are high in anti-oxidant vitamins A, C & E that protect agains vision loss.
  • Cardiovascular Health – Eating kiwi everyday may significantly lower your risk for blood clots and reduce the amount of fats (triglycerides) in your blood, therefore helping to protect cardiovascular health.

Have you had your kiwi today?

Miso Happy!

I love miso from South River Miso Company, It is simply magical and they even have both soy-free and gluten-free varieties that are simply divine!
The 10 scientifically researched benefits of eating miso
  1. Contains all essential amino acids, making it a complete protein. This in turn helps preserve beautiful skin – miso contains linoleic acid, an essential fatty acid that helps your skin stay soft and free of pigments.
  2. Antiviral — Miso is very alkalizing and helps strengthen the immune system helping to combat viral infections.
  3. Restores beneficial probiotics to the intestines.
  4. Aids in digestion and assimilation of other foods in the intestines. This happens by stimulating the secretion of digestive fluids in the stomach.
  5. Helps maintain nutritional balance — full of nutrients beneficial bacteria and enzymes, miso provides protein vitamin B12, vitamin B2, vitamin E, vitamin K, tryptophan, choline, dietary fiber, linoleic acid and lecithin.
  6. Strengthens the quality of blood and lymph fluid.
  7. Reduces risk for breast, prostate, lung and colon cancers.
  8. Protects against radiation due to dipilocolonic acid, an alkaloid that chelates heavy metals and discharges them from the body.
  9. Strengthens the immune system and helps to lower LDL Cholesterol.
  10. Anti-Aging — high in antioxidants that protect against free radicals that cause signs of aging. Miso also helps reduce menopausal complaints because the isoflavones in the miso have been shown to reduce hot flashes.
As you can see, Miso is magical, it has a sweet, earthy, fruity, savory, and salty flavor that can be used in a variety of recipes.
Miso can be used as a dairy substitute in place of milk, butter and salt in creamed soups. Unpasteurized miso used in marinades tenderize meat and vegetables by helping to break down fibers. (I personally like it on asparagus). Use miso in a casserole or soup supplies plenty of high quality protein.
Sweet & Spicy Miso Soup:
  • 1 1/2 cups blessed water
  • 1 Tablespoon Miso (Today I used Garlic Red Pepper from South River Miso)
  • 1 Tablespoon Tahini
  • 1/2 medium onion, sauteed in a teaspoon of Garlic Red Pepper Miso & 1 teaspoon honey
  • Dash of cayenne
Sautee onion and any other veggies you desire. Heat water in pan. Add Miso and Tahini, stir. Add onion and dash of cayenne. Its also delicious with sea vegetables like cut up nori or wakame. Serve!

Many of you may notice that I use cayenne a lot. I do this because my body constitution is generally cold, and cayenne helps increase circulation. It is also known in many cultures to be a potent libido enhancing aid that increases euphoric endorphins in the blood stream. How exciting!
Cayenne is also relatively high in Vitamin A, vitamin B6, Vitamin C, riboflavin, potassium and manganese.
It’s snowing here in Whitefish, Montana today so I decided to make soup to keep me warm and toasty!
Miso Dressing:
  • 1/4 cup miso of your choice (My favorite is South River Miso)
  • Juice of one lemon
  • 1/2 cup high quality olive oil
  • 1 clove garlic (optional)
  • Dash of cayenne to taste (optional)
Blend in blender, serve! It is wonderful tossed in salad, garbanzos or quinoa.
Miso Aioli:

(This is adapted from the New York Times article Umami Dearest by Mark Bittman)

  • 2 Tablespoons Miso of your choice
  • 1 cup Veganaise
Stir miso into veganaise and use within 1 week. Dip yam fries, use on sandwiches, use as a sauce/dip for veggies.
Miso Butterscotch: (This is adapted from the New York Times article Umami Dearest by Mark Bittman)
  • 1/4 cup cashews (soaked)
  • 1/2 cup blessed water
  • 1/2 cup coconut oil, melted (I melt in my dehydrator but it can easily be done on the stove top on low heat)
  • 1/4 cup light miso (I used South River Miso’s Sweet White)
  • 3/4 cup coconut sugar
Blend soaked cashews and blessed water into a creamy mixture. Combine Cream, melted coconut oil, miso and coconut sugar in blender and blend until smooth. If  the sugar is not blending well, it might be helpful to place mixture in a saucepan on stove. Place on low heat and stir until sugar dissolves (probably about 5 or 10 minutes). Add more coconut sugar if needed or even a touch of maple syrup or honey for a truly rich flavor.
This mixture is delicious over poached pears and apples as well as cabbage, eggplant or even over a sorbet.
What is your favorite miso recipe???

Thank you for all of your support!

Love always,
Michelle

Yoga and Flexibility

I am on day 15 now of my personal yoga challenge and for some reason when I think of yoga, I naturally envision a beautiful healthy person, bending their body into amazing poses or maybe I just assume that everyone is able to touch their toes without bending their legs. Well, my friends, this is certainly not me. Everyday I can feel my body stretch a little more as I practice but resistance is futile.

What is this resistance? Will I ever be able to release this resistance? Is it structural or functional resistance due to my life patterns? So I have really been trying to take the time to breath through this and listen to my body as I ease into a posture. Or sometimes when I don’t want to physically participate in a posture, I imagine myself doing the posture. When I do this it actually empowers me to keep going & keep breathing.

yoga

With every yoga pose (asana) I experience I have the opportunity to explore my body by applying more or less effort, cultivating balance and flexibility. Involving parts of my body that may other wise be dormant consciously moves energy and wakes up my body, opening myself up to a more subtle awareness. Even though I am not flexible and can’t even straighten my legs when I try to touch my toes, I continue on, movement by subtle movement.

During this process I have also started to read the powerful book, A Course In Miracles: Foundation For Inner Peace. So far I am really enjoying reading about the meaning of miracles and doing the daily lessons.

Here are some quotes from Chapter 1:

  • Miracles occur naturally as expressions of love. The real miracle is the love that inspires them. In this sense everything that comes from love is a miracle.
  • Miracles are everyone’s right, but purification is necessary first.
  • Miracles are a kind of exchange. Like expressions of love, which are always miraculous in the true sense, the exchange reverses the physical laws. They bring more love both to the giver and the receiver.
  • Prayer is the medium of miracles. It is a means to communication of the created with the Creator. Through prayer love is received, and through miracles loves is expressed.
  • Miracles are both beginnings and endings, and so they alter the temporal order. They are always affirmations of rebirth, which seem to go back but really go forward. They undo the past in the present, and thus release the future.

So onward with my yoga adventure, with increasing purpose, process and practice!!!

Love,

Michelle
